I took four levels of Spanish in high school and would consistently receive A's on all written tests and C's on all oral exams. I just couldn't bring myself to use a fake accent. The thought of it was mortifying! Therefore to this day I have a secret humorous admiration for people like Madonna (those who affect an accent) and Silvia Poggioli (those who speak accent-less and then get all tongue-rolls and tildes when pronouncing any foreign word). Listening to these folks never ceases to simultaneously embarrass me and make me giggle. And so I am taking it as a personal affront that Yves Saint Laurent's new creative director, Hedi Slimane, is robbing the brand of its "Yves" and renaming it Saint Laurent Paris. Tell me, readers, where is the fun in that?? It's just one less word to tickle my pronunciation funny bone and on those (very reasonable) grounds, I publicly protest the change.
