(Cow) Hide and Seek

Has leather ever been so pretty?  I never remember it being more so than this season’s beautiful lady-like skirts fashioned from calf skin.  I’m particularly taken with this beauty from Louis Vuitton, but everyone is showing them – Vince, Celine, and Martin Grant to name a few.   So go seek the style that suits you best.   As for me, I’ll continue to dream about the LV pictured here but will likely invest in this shorter (sigh) but infinitely more affordable Cynthia Steffe.

Good Twill Hunting

Billy Reid’s Twill Hunting Coat for Levi’s Workwear has perfectly captured that vintage- feel using turn-of-the-century manufacturing techniques and sporting details like antique brass buttons.  Not only that, it also comes replete with a full blacksmith’s apron attached to the inside which serves as a game pouch.  Need I say more?

No Skin Off My Back

No animals were harmed in the making of these Gucci python pattern lace tights.   So feel free to pair them with more lace, a simple sheath, or one of fall’s feminine skirts and pumps.

Time Matte-rs

I guess you could say that watches are the face of this fall’s military trend.   And those faces, as well as the surrounding hardware, are decidedly matte.  Take this LL Bean Signature Collection vintage field watch with canvas strap.  It’s rugged, masculine, and at $125 you can afford to buy into fall’s shearling trend as well.

Picture Perfect

Why cover a National Geographic photo on a fashion blog?  Because the above is not a photo but a luxuriant hand-knotted silk and cashmere rug designed by the late, great Alexander McQueen.  If you were as enamored with his 2009 collection as I was (which featured many pieces with hummingbirds), then you will be enchanted by his devastatingly beautiful design for the Rug Company.  Eerie and spectacular in equal measures, these colorful birds are captured forever ascending into the night sky.  They say that hummingbirds flap their wings at a rate of approximately 100 flaps per second.  If you had $10 for each flap captured in this sumptuous rug, you could still not afford it.  ($18,900 made to order)

What’s The Story?

Stella Jacket

“Katha” means story or fable in Sanskrit and so Stella McCartney’s camel coated, peplum, Katha jacket is aptly named.  It tells the story of three of this season’s hottest trends – (1) the return to ladylike, curvy shapes; (2) the emphasis on tailored suiting; (3)the current explosion of neutral coloring. (The two-button shoulder closure is also faintly military – another white hot trend for fall.)  This is an investment piece, for sure, but one that can be justified when you consider it’s uber versatility- pair with skinny jeans, narrow pants, a pencil skirt, or even a sheath dress.  As appropriate for work as it is for a night out, it’s the ultimate day-to-night piece for fall.  It can also serve as the happy ending to your wardrobe story.

Yes Wee-kend

Bally-Men-Bags-Tekaro MD

Week long summer vacations have passed but fall brings something almost as good – the weekend jaunt!  Men, as you begin to think about where you’ll take your honey apple picking/leaf viewing/wine tasting, you should also contemplate the luggage that will get you there.  Enter the Bally Tekaro MD in noisettes gloss deerskin.  This super chic, butter- soft bag with detachable straps and sporty (yet classic) racing stripes is the perfect size for toting all your weekend essentials.  My clients always ask me if I can source the perfect weekender and now, thanks to Bally, yes-we-can!

Felt Up

Marie L’Aventure’s gorgeous lingerie line serves to underscore the fact that Belgian fame is no longer limited to waffles.  This season the brand has paired up with another Belgian fashion label, A.F. Vandevorst, to produce a  collection of undergarments with a felt-like aesthetic.  The line is simply titled Marie L’Aventure by A.F. Vandevorst and the pieces (8 in total – bras, briefs, corsets, and bustiers) are actually made of a technical material and then printed over with a photograph of felt for the final visual effect.  The line will be on sale this month through myintimacy.com.

Who Says It’s Wrong to Look Plastic?

Italian furniture house, Kartell, has made looking plastic tres chic again.  (Attenzione, Heidi Montag!)   You may recall their  “Glue Cinderella” collection(2009) of  rubber pumps as well as their cute and comfy ballet flats.   Now, just in time for fall, Kartell has designed sleek, wedge-heeled Wellies in contrasting colors.  My recommendation is to kill two birds with one (plastic) stone by snapping up an olive/dove gray pair.  You’ll not only hit the wedge trend but the all-things-in-army-colors-trend as well!

Jean-Michel Cazabat

Like chocolate and peanut butter, like Blake Lively and mini-dresses, like camping and anyone other than me…summer and gold sandals are the perfect union.  However, finding THEE pair is nothing less than stress inducing.  The goals:  relative comfort, extreme style, and super versatility.   Enter the “Fabia” by Jean-Michel Cazabat.  Shorts, dresses, skirts, jeans, a bikini/cover-up – all of your summer gear will benefit from the chic addition of these gems.  Plus, think of how light your weekender will be sans shoes since you’ll be shod in these 24/7!
